What Is a Sprinter Van? Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Explained

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a full-size van and a leading camper conversion chassis.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a full-size commercial van, sold in the U.S. as cargo, passenger, crew, and cab-chassis models. It is one of the most popular chassis for professional camper conversions, thanks to about 79 inches of standing room in the high roof, a turbodiesel engine, and available AWD and 4x4.

A quick history

Mercedes-Benz introduced the Sprinter in Europe in 1995. It has been sold in the U.S. for decades, and U.S. final assembly is in North Charleston, South Carolina. Engines have changed over the years: older vans, like the 2017 Sprinter 144 4x4 in our pre-owned inventory, use a 3.0-liter V6 diesel, while current vans use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel.

Key specs (current model year, approximate)

| | Sprinter 144" | Sprinter 170" | 170" Extended | |---|:---:|---:| | Overall length | ~234 in | ~274 in | ~290 in | | High roof exterior height | ~107–109 in | ~109 in | ~111 in | | Interior standing height (high roof) | ~79 in | ~79 in | ~79 in | | Engine | 2.0L turbodiesel, ~170 hp (standard) or ~210 hp (high output) | same | same | | Transmission | Nine-speed automatic | same | same | | Drivetrain | RWD standard; AWD and 4x4 available | same | same | | Fuel tank | ~24.5 gallons of diesel | same | same |

Gross vehicle weight ratings run from roughly 9,050 pounds on a 2500 to 11,030 on a 3500. Figures vary by trim, so confirm against the build sheet.

Why builders choose it

  • Standing room. A six-footer can stand in a high-roof Sprinter.

  • Diesel economy and range. Converted vans commonly see high-teens to low-twenties mpg.

  • Real AWD and 4x4 options for snow and dirt roads.

  • Resale value and deep aftermarket support.

The trade-offs

Sprinters cost more up front than a Transit or ProMaster, and service means a Mercedes-Benz commercial dealer or a shop that knows the platform. Diesel exhaust fluid needs topping up. Compare it directly in our Ford Transit vs. Mercedes Sprinter guide.
