Ford Transit vs. Mercedes Sprinter

Diesel or gas, AWD or 4x4, garage fit or ground clearance. A Boulder van builder's honest framework for choosing between the Transit and the Sprinter.

We build on both. That is the first thing worth saying, because most of the comparisons you will read online are written by shops that only build on one. We convert Sprinters and Transits in the same Boulder shop, we service both, and we have no reason to talk you into either. Here is how we actually walk customers through it.

Start with drivetrain and fuel

The Sprinter is diesel, with intelligent AWD and traction control. If you are pushing into snow, washboard, or steep forest-service roads regularly, that hardware matters. Diesel also gives you better highway economy and a longer legs-between-fill-ups feel.

The Transit is gasoline, with AWD. Gas engines start easier in deep cold without block heaters or fuel gelling concerns, fuel is available everywhere, and routine maintenance is cheaper. For most people driving pavement to a trailhead, the Transit's AWD is genuinely enough.

Then think about service access

This is the factor people underweight and regret. Sprinter service means visiting the Titan Service Center in Boulder, CO or a Mercedes-Benz commercial dealer, which can mean a long tow in rural country. Ford's dealer network is denser and parts are usually on the shelf. If your travel is remote and long-haul, map the service network for both before you decide.

Then the money

A comparably equipped Transit typically costs meaningfully less up front than a Sprinter, and less to maintain. The Sprinter holds resale value well and carries a premium-brand feel inside the cab. Neither of those is a wrong reason to choose.

Then the shape of the space

The Transit High Roof gives you the most interior standing height in the class. The Sprinter gives you a narrower body, a tighter turning circle in the 144, and a 170 Extended option for people who want a rear garage and a fixed bed.

Our honest summary

Choose the Sprinter for genuine off-pavement capability, diesel range, and long-term resale. Choose the Transit for value, service simplicity, standing room, and lower cost of ownership. We will build you something excellent on either one.
