How made-to-order lean manufacturing, in-house CNC milling, and digital design let Titan Vans build custom camper vans without custom-shop chaos.
There is a persistent belief in this industry that you get to pick two of three: custom, high quality, or reasonably priced. We reject that, and the reason is manufacturing discipline.
The problem with the traditional custom shop
A conventional conversion shop starts each van nearly from scratch. Measurements are taken by hand, panels are fitted by eye, and every build is a prototype. Prototypes are slow, expensive, and inconsistent — and when something fails three years later, nobody has a drawing of the part.
What we do instead
We design every component in CAD and cut it on our own machines. A cabinet side in van number four hundred is dimensionally identical to the one in van number one, because both came from the same file and the same tooling.
That changes everything downstream. Parts fit the first time. Assembly is predictable. Lead times are real numbers rather than hopeful ones. And in ten years, when you need a replacement panel, we still have the file.
Made to order, not made to stock
Lean manufacturing's core idea is simple: build what the customer actually ordered, when they ordered it, and eliminate everything that does not add value for them. We do not build vans to sit on a lot hoping someone wants that exact configuration. We build yours.
The practical benefit is that customization stops being expensive. Because our components are modular and precisely manufactured, choosing a different galley or a different bed configuration is a change in the build order — not a week of head-scratching in the shop.
Waste is not just material
Lean thinking treats rework, waiting, and over-processing as waste too. Every hour a van sits waiting for a part that does not fit is an hour you are paying for. Manufacturing in-house removes most of that waiting, because we are not at the mercy of a supplier's lead time for a component only we use.

Tighter tolerances than hand-fitting produces. Consistent quality rather than build-to-build variation. Honest lead times. Serviceability, because documented parts can be remade. And pricing we can publish openly, because we know what a build actually costs us.
